Breaking Words Apart: Structural Analysis

Syllables

Many children and adults have "long word-a-phobia."  They have no problem reading short words, but they struggle with reading longer words.  A remedy to this problem is to become familiar with types of syllables and with the "Spot and Dot" strategy.

The "Spot and Dot" Syllabication Strategy

  1. "Spot and Dot" the vowels  (Put a dot over each vowel)
  2. Connect the dots
  3. Look at the number of consonants between the vowels
  4. If two--break the word between the consonants to find each syllable
  5. If one--break right after the first vowel.  If it doesn't sound right, move over one sound.

Once you've broken the word into syllables, you can use your CLOVER rules to help read each syllable!
