Comprehension

Good readers think about what they are reading before they read, while they read, and after they read.  Below are some strategies to use while reading with a child.

Before Reading...

  • Look at the title and pictures.
  • Predict what the story will be about.
  • Talk about what you already know about the topic of the story.
  • Read the first page and predict what might happen next.

During Reading...

  • Close your eyes and picture what is happening in the story.
  • Ask yourself what might happen next.
  • Change your predictions about the story as you read more.
  • Think about how a character might feel.
  • Talk about the pictures.

After Reading...

  • Retell the story and create a new ending
  • Retell the story from another character's point of view
  • Draw or color your favorite part of the story
  • Talk about the story and how it relates to your life
