Reading Strategies

The FLOSS Rule

When spelling a one-syllable word that has the /f/, /l/, or /s/ sound at the end, the last letter is doubled.

Example:
1.  "Floss" - 1 syllable word
2.  "Floss" -ends with the sound /s/
3.  "Floss" -last letter (s) is doubled (-ss)

Vowel Pairs: EE, EA, AI, AY, OA, UE

When two vowels go walking, the first vowel does the talking and the other one stays silent!

Examples:
need
seat
paid
boat
glue

The Magic or Silent E

When a one-syllable word has an "e" at the end, the "e" is usually silent and makes the vowel say it's name.

Example:
1.  State - 1 syllable
2.  State - has an "e" at end
3.  State -  the "a" says it's name

*This doesn't work if the word has a vowel pair (beak)*
